With this campaign we are trying to raise money and awareness for some of the most vulnerable people, who have not yet gotten any help (!) after experiencing the consequences of the extreme climate change-caused event in March 2023, Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, the longest cyclone in human history. Malawi is one of the countries most affected by climate change and one of the least contributing to it. Beyond that, we would like to raise in you, your spirit of solidarity to provide support to these people, who urgently need to cover their most basic human needs.

Crowdfunding Campaign – Cyclone Freddy

We are Andrea Pérez and Julia Schaaf.

What did exactly happen?

In March 2023, Cyclone Freddy ripped through the southern region (Mulanje, Phalombe, Thyolo, Nsanje) of Malawi, destroying everything (lives, families, houses, crops, animals) in its path.

The intense and uninterrupted rains, as well as winds of up to 200 km/h lasted 5 days, causing floods and landslides both in the countryside and in the cities.

Cyclone Freddy’s critical consequences in Malawi

This extreme weather event claimed the lives of around 1,200 people. In addition, it left more than 650,000 people displaced, who now live in the best of cases, with their relatives or neighbors, while others still live in emergency camps or on the street.

Although donations from the international community have arrived, they have been mostly concentrated in the most remote region, which was only accessible by plane. Schools have become refugee camps, which in turn causes the loss of school classes for many children and teenagers. Moreover, many schools have been destroyed and they have not yet received any communication and/or help from the government. Students are taking exams outside the rooms, under trees.

In general, but especially for rural people in Malawi, the maize crop represents a couple of months of secure food. However, the cyclone destroyed countless crops in the south of the country, which is causing a crisis of hunger at this very moment.

Let’s not forget Malawi!

Let’s support each other! I, Andrea, live and work in Malawi since 2022. I am on the ground of this initiative. I am supporting two specific communities in Thyolo and in Mulanje. They are self-organized communities, which have the potential to be self-sufficient in the long term if given the chance. From here, I will make sure that the donations raised are invested in dignity for the most vulnerable people.

Julia lives in Germany. She is in charge of the technical part of this fundraising campaign. She has prepared the ways to collect the donations from Germany and from all around the globe.

Together we will provide short financial and narrative reports over the whole initiative and any other information you might want to know.
